The role of art in fostering civic engagement
Art is widely recognized as a powerful tool for promoting civic participation and fostering social cohesion, a principle that lies at the core of the "Misahat Mushtaraka" program implemented by « Dancers Citizens South » organization. This project aims to create a safe space built on collaboration among different components of civil society and seeks to consolidate individual rights and freedoms. In the same context, this podcast features Mr. Houssin Rhili, a specialist in development and resource management at the Faculty of Science in Tunis, and Mr. Ahmed Guerfel, a professional artist and Executive Director of DCS organization. This dialogue addressed the role of art in raising awareness about contemporary social, economic, and cultural issues, as well as the importance of networking a large number of associations to integrate the youth in public affairs. Mr. Houssin Rhili highlighted the outcomes of « Misahat Mushtaka » project during the period from June 2022 to June 2023 which included a series of initiatives. The most significant among them were invading public spaces through street art performances in five southeastern regions and panel discussions in cafés, with a strong focus on Art Bootcamps. AMIR SABRA
A Palestinian dancer and choreographer currently working as the artistic director of Stereo 48. His dance began in 2008, with an identity band in Askar camp. In 2015, he worked with the Belgian company “Les ballet c de la b” in the joint Abdelmohsen Kattan Foundation and Belgian Flemish Theater KVS dance show. He worked with local and international dance companies such as Farah Saleh (Palestine), Saraya Ramallah (Palestine) and Pokemon (France). Catherine Young Dance (Ireland), Liz Roche Dance Company (Ireland). Amir designed a collection of works with Stereo 48 such as Hip Hop Gigs 2017, until spring 2018, Journey to Jerusalem 2019, False Awakening 2020. The final work is What Happened Behind the Curtain 2022, which received the Technical Award at the Danse Élargie Festival in Paris.

Her love for dancing began when she was little. She grew up listening to R&B music and found inspiration in the performances of artists like Ciara, Beyoncé, Shakira, and Missy Elliott in their music videos. At the age of 12, she started taking modern dance and gymnastics classes. Later on, she joined the Sihem Belkhoudja company, where she spent four years attending classes in hip-hop, modern, and contemporary dance. Afterward, her curiosity led her to explore a new dance style, and she began taking bachata dance lessons. Eventually, she even started assisting her partner in teaching others. Concurrently, she became a member of an afro dance crew, immersing herself in the art of afro dance and performing with them on stage. Currently, she actively practices and performs as an afro and latino dancer. However, she remains open to new experiences, challenges, and the opportunity to acquire new skills.

The Artistic Bootcamp is an activity of the MISAHAT Mushataraka programThis Bootcamp is based on research and testing among a group of artists in Tunisia and the Arab region, and studied the intersection of the artistic and creative field and its relation to local contexts.The performance produced was a translation of social, economic and cultural reality, regarding civic engagement, aimed at involving individuals in their communities to make a positive difference. Taking place between May 28th and June 4th, 2023, at the No Name Artistic Studio Lab in Gabes - Tunisia, this bootcamp brought together a diverse group of artists from all around Tunisia and trainers of the MENA region. Together, they embarked on a journey of research, experimentation, and collaboration to explore the relationship between art, creativity, and local contexts. The Artistic Bootcamp was grounded in extensive research and testing conducted among a group of artists in Tunisia and the wider Arab region. The goal was to understand how the artistic and creative field intersects with local contexts. Through this process, participants gained insights into the challenges, aspirations, and unique characteristics of their communities. ACHWAK BENNAJI
Achwak Bennaji is a talented singer from Monastir, Tunisia, who has always had a passion for music. However, it wasn't until she started singing as a form of self-expression that she realized her true calling. Her voice was a powerful tool, and with each performance, she began to see the possibilities of living a life driven by her passion for music. Recently, Achwak has participated in artistic bootcamps with Dancers Citizens South, where she collaborated with fellow Tunisian artists and musicians to create unique and innovative performances. The bootcamps provided an opportunity for Achwak to explore new creative avenues and experiment with different styles.
Belfallegui Bootcamp: Empowering Southern Tunisia’s Marginalized Communities
From 14 to 17 February, we had the privilege of hosting the Belfallegui Bootcamp - a unique opportunity to engage with hard-to-reach older people in the south of Tunisia and discuss the problems facing their communities. Led by expert facilitator Houcine Rhili, the bootcamp was a resounding success, with participants sharing their experiences, learning from others, and brainstorming innovative solutions to the challenges facing their communities. The Belfallegui Bootcamp aimed to open a safe space among hard-to-reach communities, particularly the elderly population, in the four southern regions of Gabes, Medenine, Tataouine, and Sfax. Through open and honest dialogue, we hoped to motivate these communities to share their viewpoints and take an active role in shaping their regions's destiny. The bootcamp was held in four different regions: Matmata in Gabes, Ezzahra in Tataouine, Medenine City, and Sfax City. Each session involved interactive discussions and activities, led by experienced facilitator Houcine Rhili. Participants had the opportunity to share their experiences, learn from others, and brainstorm innovative solutions to the challenges facing their community. In conclusion the Belfallegui Bootcamp was an incredible opportunity to empower Tunisia's marginalized communities and promote open dialogue. Getting through gender dance stigma and societal challenges, Sarra Zaltni, at a very young age has passed challenging stereotypes to show up as a dancer in Mareth, a town located in Gabes governorate, Tunisia. Her dance journey started with a poster in her high school where she went for an audition at the cultural center in Mareth and got accepted to keep her passion revived through performing in different local and regional competitions and events in Mareth, Djerba, including Label’Zic in Medenine. Aged 19 years old and currently preparing for the baccalaureate exam, the young dancer balances her study and her dance passion, through her dance process, Sarra has been experimenting with different styles including Hip Hop, break dance, popping, and Afro to establish herself currently in a mixture between Hip Hop and break dance. Finding her serenity and calm in dancing, “ Dance is my half, I just put music in my ears, walk and I am free,” Sarra Says, Giving her a sense of belonging with no gender and sex discrimination, the hip-hop and break dancer works to break viewers’ and outsiders’ perspectives toward dancers.
