Within the framework of the From & To People program, a series of field visits was organized to immerse participants in the artisanal and ecological landscape of Southern Tunisia. These visits offered a direct encounter with the living ecosystem of traditional crafts and the natural resources of the Mediterranean oases of Gabès.
The itinerary began on February 13 with an exploration of the Chenini oasis, followed by a visit to the Traditional Crafts Museum, where participants were introduced to the historical and cultural dimensions of local craftsmanship.
On February 14, the group continued the journey to Ouedhref, visiting a wool processing and spinning factory, along with several local workshops dedicated to Margoum weaving and Smar fiber crafts. These encounters provided a closer understanding of the material processes and skills sustaining the region’s artisanal heritage.
Rather than a simple observation exercise, the experience became a meaningful moment of exchange and reflection. It strengthened participants’ awareness of the vital role of local natural resources in traditional crafts, while opening up new perspectives for developing sustainable artistic practices rooted in ecological and cultural identity.
By connecting field knowledge with contemporary artistic thinking, the program continues to foster new ways of engaging with territory, memory, and material culture in Southern Tunisia.
